It’s been over a year since the last batch of intelligent drum & bass tunes on TYFTH, but as I haven’t been listening to much freeform during this past busy week it seems the right time to post up a few more favourites.
First of all, big thanks again to Pearsall for linking to Hardscore on Sonicrampage, a truly amazing collection of 90s jungle that will keep me going for the rest of the year and then some. Some of DJ Extreme’s sets are incredible, admirably staying away from a lot of the usual anthems, and even sneaking in some promos I’ve never heard before.
One classic I’ve rediscovered is Atlas’ Second Heaven, a tune I totally fell in love with about 16 years ago…
Next is another tune from 1994 – D.O.P.E’s Travelling. Brilliant drum programming and vocal samples make this one, I’ve always loved the atmosphere.
Drift to the Centre by Aquarius (aka Photek) is an absolute classic, with inspired vocals, lovely sub and amens, as well as one of my favourite breakdowns. Why on earth don’t tunes sound like this any more?
Even more chilled is Lush Life from J Majik, a very deep track I first heard in 1996.
Ulysees has that timeless Shogun combination of pacy drums over deep pads/melodies, and a lovely intro…
Finally, here’s what might be my favourite Source Direct track – 1994’s Shimmer.
Yeah, I’m a big fan of the Smooth Grooves series, too! Some of the best deep drum n’ bass mixes I’ve ever heard.

Drift to the Centre is probably one of the most nostalgic tracks I have. It would be awesome to see producers today making that kind of stuff. They’re far and few between.
